Johnny Chan was born in Canton, China in 1957. He moved with his family to the United States when he was a child. As a teenager he worked at his family’s restaurant and learned how to play poker at the local bowling alley in his free time. It wasn’t long before he became a winning player. Chan made his first trip to Las Vegas at age 16, where he illegally played with $500. He made $20,000 in just one night, but lost it all the next day. He went back home to his family, where he practiced and worked hard at honing his game. After a few years Chan moved to Las Vegas. He earned the moniker “Orient Express” after the America’s Cup Tournament, when he knocked 13 of 16 players out of the tournament in 30 minutes. Chan won the World Series of Poker Main Event championship in 1987 and 1988, and was on his way in 1989 to a three-peat, but took second when a then relatively unknown Phil Hellmuth, Jr. won the main event. Chan has 25 career wins and 90 cashes. Chan was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1992. He currently is tied at 10 with Doyle Brunson for second-most WSOP bracelets.
