As big as poker has gotten, all over the world, in the last eight years, the biggest, best, and most prestigious poker competition remains the World Series of Poker. Although we are months away from the 2010 WSOP, it is closer than you think.
My annual goal is to play in the main event of the World Series of Poker without laying the ten grand down to do so. I have managed to be a part of “The Big Dance” half a dozen times. I have won satellites, had as many as 27 partners, and even had my name drawn out of a barrel of thousands of names to win a seat! In 1998, my first time to play in the BIG ONE, I placed 10th.. A few years ago, I placed in the top 5% which gave me and my partners a nice payday. For the main event of the 2008 WSOP; I won my seat in a home poker club, the 10-K Club. This year, I am in another 10-K poker club. Out of 15 players, I am leading the pact with four games to go. Although I live in Las Vegas and have for a long time, this WSOP main event satellite theory can work from anywhere in the world. You can find in depth detail and even an excellent structure chart in my book, “1000 Best Poker Strategies and Secrets”, but for a quickie how to, here is how it works.
It’s too late to start a 10-K poker club for the 2010 WSOP, but you can be ready for 2011. In a nutshell: Organize a poker club –finding 10 friends who love to play poker and have a desire to play in the WSOP main event is not difficult.
Each month, each member will pay $100. Using a point system, one point will be awarded to the first player eliminated, two points to the second, on up to 10 points for the winner. At the end of 10 months (or 10 games), accumulate each player’s individual points; the player with the most points wins the $10,000 seat. You may want to figure in an amount for transportation and accommodations for the winner.
A good idea is to have your winner play for 50 percent of any win with the other 50 percent being divided equally among the remaining players. That way, if your club has a winner, everyone wins! After all, everyone participated in accumulating the finances to make this poker dream become a reality.
This satellite poker club can send your champion to any major tournament, anywhere in the world, just adjust the math. Most importantly, have fun!
