Poker in Twitter: After School All-Stars and World Team Poker

Posted by: MarieLizette |

relevant portions of the article written by Brett Collson:

At the inaugural World Team Poker tournament at the Golden Nugget this week, Team Full Tilt’s Jennifer Harman tried to rally the Twitter universe around her United States team: “We’re playing the first World Team Poker Tournament. Root for Team USA.” Todd Brunson, who wasn’t chosen for the team, jokingly replied, “@REALJenHarman I hope you guys lose! Go team Mejico!!!!!!!”

Team USA member Mike Matusow tried to emulate Harman’s patriotism, but “The Mouth” still needs some serious Twitter lessons: “Ship it @TheMouthMatusiw representing Team USA @WorldTeamPoker.” Notice that Matusow spelled his own name wrong. Sorry Mikey, that page doesn’t exist.

Team China and Team Brazil are still going at it heads-up.  Currently at Level 22, Johnny Chan has 245K Chips and Leandro Pimentel has 155K Chips.  We have just colored up several 500 pink chips to 5K black chips.  Although there have been several all-ins at this point, they have all been left uncalled - event against a raise.

These two teams have been playing for 16 hours straight.

Team China Doubles Up!!

Posted by: MarieLizette |

David Chiu put 90% of his chips in pre-flop in PLO and was snap called by Pimentel - in the dark.  the 4,8,4 board sicken Chui and he  turned to Chan for guidance.  Chan didn't think Chiu could fold and insisted that he push the rest in.  After much hesitation Chiu did, in fact push in and Pimentel called.

Pimental had 8s and 4s while Chiu had just one pair, w/ two overs - Ace and a 9. Team China spiked an Ace on the turn for the lead and the deuce of diamonds hit the river.  Although the deuce gave Brazil 3 pair, it did not improve the hand and Team China doubled up.

Pimentel now ha 119K and Chan has over 210K - the tide has indeed turned in Team China now has the lead, 2 to 1.  But it is still too soon to tell as Team Brazil has their most aggressive player in charge of their chips and he has already proven that he may be down - but don't count him out!

Heads-Up - Brazil vs. China

Posted by: MarieLizette |
Tagged in: Untagged

Team Brazil goes into heads-up play with a 3 to 1 chip lead against Team China.  The game is still No Limit Hold'em and the blinds are 1K/3K/6K.

Team Brazil continues to utilize Leandro "Brasa" Pimentel as its front man, while Team China sweats 10 time WSOP Bracelet winner Johnny Chan (and Team Co-Captain).

Pimentel is a well regarded as a Full Tilt Poker Red Pro and has acheived several titles in Brazil and here in the United States, included a heads-up championship back in 2008.

Needless to say, this is not Chan's first time at the rodeo either.  Ten bracelets and a profitable poker career that spans two decades - - need we say more?  Chan has both the skill and confidences to even out the chip differential.

Both teams are incredibly talented and it is simply too early to call it and unlikely that this battle of heads up will end quickly.

Team Greece Goes Out on the Bubble

Midway through Level 18 NLH, Greece pushed All-In and was snap called by Brazil.

Kapalas was playing for Team Greece and showed two 9s.  Pimentel was still seated for Team Brazil and turned over pocket 10s!  The flop was 4, 6, 7 - all clubs.  A quick scan of the hands proved that it is never easy when the chips are pushed all-in pre-flop.  Only Kapalas had a club to go with this gut shot (runner-runner) straight draw.

Unfortunately, it was not to be...  the dealer threw up two bricks, the Ace of hearts on the turn and the deuce of diamonds on the River.

Brazil erupted in cheer (and China quietly fist pumped) as Kapalas and his team winced in defeat.

Team Greece knew that they came to this Inaugural Event as unknown talent and were considered by others a underdogs, they said as much in their press interview on Tuesday.  However, against all odds, Kapalas and Theofanopoulos (who became known as the two Georges) lead their team to an amazing finish.  They faught hard and play exceptionally well.  Congratulations Team Greece - mission accomplished, Greace is on the poker map as a serious contender in the world forum.

Greece and its team of poker players are sure to be closely watched in the days and months to come.  We expect great things from them.

Brasa has continued his aggressive style and has regained his chip lead.  Team Brazil has over 200K, Team China is still atop about 120K while Greece has been pushed off two raises and has less than 75K left.

We are still at Lvl 18 NLH - 1k/3k/6k
